$9.00 each |
Small fossil fish - These beauties
are called Dastilbe and come from Brazil. They date from the Lower Cretaceous
period. Until recently Brazil did not allow the shipping of fossils
out of the country, so these were extremely difficult to find. They are
often called "broken neck" fish because most often their head hangs down
after death.
These are all about 1.5" x 2". $9.00

Wyoming Fossil Fish Pair - These

This one is almost big enough to fillet.
The matrix weighs over 10 pounds. It is a Mioplosus - Wyoming.
Mioplosus labracoides is believed to have been a voracious predator among
the Green River fish fossils. Failure to find its numbers in mass mortality
leads to further conjecture that it was a solitary hunter. A member of the
Family Percidae, it has numerous relatives in Northern Hemisphere fresh
water as well as fossil relatives in Asia, Europe and New Zealand. It is
known as a predatory species as determined from its many pointed teeth, and
the fact that several have been found with fish lodged in its throat. It may
be related to the modern-day pike of the genus Stezostedion.
Distinguishing features include double dorsal fins and a fan-like
tail. Mioplosus is uncommon in the Green River formation, especially the
fish of this size and of this exceptional quality of preservation. |

This beauty is almost 8 inches long -
Diplomystus - Wyoming - The largest herring genus in the ancient
lake deposits is the Diplomystus. It can be distinguished from the Knightia
by the presence and pattern of scale rows or scutes that lie along the
midline of the back from the skull to the dorsal fin. The deep bodied form
and elongnate anal fin are easily recognizable traits of this fish. In the
late 1800’s, Professor E.D. Cope described three species of Diplomystus. The
largest and most widely known is the Diplomystus dentatus. It was this
species of fish that was chosen by the late President Eisenhower as a gift
to the Emperor of Japan from the American people. The body form and upturned
mouth indicate that the fish probably fed on smaller surface dwelling
species such as Knightia and Priscacara. Several prime examples of
Diplomystus’ diet have turned up in the stomachs of a few specimens |

Do it yourself - This is a matrix that
has a nice fish that has not yet been fully exposed. This is the only one I
have like this. By scratching the matrix to expose the entire fish, you can
get a feel as to how labor intensive this is. |
