Civil War Battlefield Relic Displays, Etc.

A partial list of available displays is below. There are several pages of items.

I am working on many new displays which will be posted as they are completed.

My Excavated Relics

My Civil War battlefield relic displays are made up of dug artifacts that have been dug on battlefields, campgrounds, skirmish areas, hospital areas, etc. To the best of my knowledge, none have been dug in protected areas, but rather on private property with the owner's permission. I primarily use a half dozen professional and amateur diggers in Virginia and Pennsylvania and one in Mississippi. As these diggers work an area, they bag their finds and label those bags with the area from which they were found. When they send me a shipment of finds, I sort them out, clean off any remaining dirt, identify the individual pieces, and create my displays. Each of my displays has a description of the included items and where they were found. All items are authentic and are guaranteed to have been excavated in the area from which the relic is described as having come. I do not sell individual relics - only displays I make from those relics. Those marked "generic" or "stock" are displays I create a half dozen or so at a time. If there is a picture, it is representative of those displays. NOTE: With a few exceptions, my diggers label their finds as to the general area rather than specific area. i.e. "Gettysburg" or "Corinth/Shiloh corridor" rather than a specific battle or skirmish.

"Dropped bullets" are those bullets that were dropped rather than being shot. A soldier may have dropped a bullet while attempting to load in the heat of battle; he may have been wounded and when he fell he lost his pouch of bullets; a cache of bullets may have been buried by one side or the other for later retrieval in a hasty retreat or advance, etc. Also, for my purposes, a shot bullet that was not damaged is considered a dropped bullet.

"Shot bullets" are just that. They are ones which have been shot. While many prefer the dropped bullets, I far prefer the shot ones if they are identifiable.

Each of my displays comes with an eBooklet that has details on the various areas my relics come from and a section describing the various bullets that were used.

Frames: Many of my pictures show the display in a frame. Because of the additional shipping and packaging costs, I no longer ship my displays framed unless it is noted in the description. The background my relics are affixed to are laminated in a 10mil heavy Mylar. They are trimmed to fit in a standard 8.5" x 11" frame or a standard 5" x 7" frame. These frames, similar to the ones pictured, can be obtained from WalMar, Dollar Stores, and similar locations for $2.00 to $2.50 each for the least expensive wooden frames. The frames I use in the jpegs are special ones that hold 3-dimensional items off my scanner bed.

Wholesale Info: If you are a dealer, museum gift shop, antique/collectibles shop, etc. the discount is 20% with a minimum order of 10 displays. Please include a copy of your resale certificate with your order.

Custom Orders: I solicit custom orders. Charges are based upon the items going into the display and are subject to the items I have in stock or can locate.

Shipping Info: For displays I have on the shelf, I ship the Friday of the week payment is received. I create my displays on the weekend, so for any custom displays or standard displays I must create, they are shipped the Friday of the week after payment is received. I normally make all shipments on Friday. Shipments are made either via United Parcel Service or USPS.  My shipping charges are normally based upon weight of the item and includes insurance.

Foreign Shipping Info: Foreign buyers need to contact me for shipping charges.

Personalized Displays: My displays are all created one at a time. Most of them can be personalized at no additional charge. As an example, if you had an ancestor who fought at Shiloh or Petersburg and would like the headline and text customized to include a little information about that ancestor, there would be no additional charge providing all I have to do is to replace the pictured text and not re-design the entire display and providing I have enough relics from that area to produce the display. Just keep your text to about the same length as the text in the pictured display.

My relics are presented the way I receive them from my diggers with one exception. I use a toothbrush to brush away any loose material from the relic. Each of these displays are one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale.

If you have a special interest in relics from a particular area, please email me at: cy@hotlinecy.com and let me know the area and I will see if I have any from there. Most of my relics are from around Gettysburg, Corinth, and Shiloh. I have smaller numbers of relics from many different sites in VA, as well as some other areas. Unfortunately, I have none from areas west of Louisiana. I have some 15,000 - 20,000 dug small relics that are bagged as to where they came from but I have not had time to make displays out of them yet. All of my items are used for displays. I do not sell individual relics.

Please bookmark this site because I am always putting together new displays from my current inventory of relics and new relics as I receive them. My displays are one-of-a-kind and when one is sold I attempt to make a note of that in the description in a timely manner, but it is often that I must wait until the weekend to work on this site.

The pictures and descriptions are to give you an idea what is available and the approximate price for a similar display with a particular type of focal point relic. A pictured display may or may not be available, but I will generally make several similar displays at a time using similar relics, if I have the relics.

If a picture is not linked to a display or you would like a jpeg of the actual item you will be receiving, please email me and I will send it to you by email.

Relic Displays

The relic displays below are all representative. Each is unique, but I am often able to make several displays using the same types of relics.

CW001 - CSA Flag Fragment - This is an incredible find and the provenance is impeccable. It is a fragment from a Confederate guide flag that was picked up on the battlefield at Bull Run by Col. J. T. Gibson. The display comes with the copy of a note Col Gibson wrote describing the piece and where he picked it up. The original blood stained flag measured approximately 29" x 25" but when I obtained it the flag had seriously deteriorated and measured about 22" long. The flag was passed down to Colonel Xenophone Herbert Price, who was General Blackjack Pershing's assistant in Paris, France during the 1920's and 1930's. Price began his military career as an aid to President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 and ended with a four year tour of duty in the European Theater of Operations during WWII. I have been told that Price is also credited with writing the inscription on the Tomb of the Unknown Solder at Arlington National Cemetery, but I have not been able to confirm that yet. The flag was passed onto his daughter Claire - General Pershing's God-Daughter. It was acquired by an antique dealer from Claire's estate and I acquired it from that dealer. In order to make this treasure available to more people, I made a display of a larger portion of the flag for my personal collection and divided the remainder into smaller pieces and framed them with a 5" x 7" descriptive background - pictured. The purchaser will receive photos of the complete item as I received it, the full provenance and my unconditional certificate of authenticity, which is backed by the certificate of authenticity from the antique dealer I acquired it from and the provenance. The second picture is the flag as I received it and the third picture is everything I received when I acquired the flag. Only 7 available.

CW002 - CSA Stamp Display - This beautiful display of Confederate States of America stamps includes an original CSA stamp and reproductions of the Thomas de la Rue stamp, (the London printer who designed and printed some of the CSA stamps) and a complete set of all 14 CSA stamps in my collection that are in facsimile. The display comes in a heavy poly holder that is punched to fit a standard 3-ring binder or it can be framed in an 8" x 10" or larger frame. The collection also comes with details on each of the 14 CSA issues. Please note that in my scan it appears that some of the red is bleeding. That is the quality of the scan. The piece is clean and crisp. Original CSA stamps are getting much more difficult to find and the ones I use on my displays are nice ones. $29.00

$6.00

CW003 - Gettysburg Relic Display - This very nice display contains 5 authentic relics excavated in the Gettysburg battle area. Included is an artillery fragment that I personally excavated in the late 1940's and 4 bullets one of my diggers excavated in the area. The 8" x 10" descriptive page does not come with the pictured frame, but you can put it in any 8" x 10" or larger frame. I will not be able to create many more of these because I've used almost all of the artillery fragments that are small enough to fit on the descriptive background. $35.00

$6.00

CW004 - Unusual Bullet Display - This great display contains 7 different unusual bullets. Included is a misfired pulled bullet, a chewed or pain bullet, a CSA Buck and Ball bullet, a carved bullet, a musket nipple made out of a bullet, a gambling chip made from a bullet, and one other unusual bullet. The picture is representative of the one you would receive $69.00

$6.00

CW005 - Pain Bullet Display - This display contains a chewed or pain bullet and a similar dropped bullet for comparison. Often ether was not available in field hospitals and when a soldier was being operated on he would be given a bullet to chew on - thus the term, "bite the bullet." The descriptive background is cut to fit a standard 5" x 7" frame. The pictured frame is not included. $24.00

$6.00

CW006 - 4-Bullet Display - This very nice display would make an excellent and inexpensive gift. It contains 4 different dropped or shot excavated Civil War bullets. These bullets were all excavated in the North Virginia area, but my digger did not give me the actual site where they were excavated. The descriptive background is cut to fit a standard 5" x 7" frame. See "Frames" in the header of this page $24.00

$6.00

CW007 - 5-Relic Attributed Display - This display contains 4 different bullets and one other excavated relic from a specific battle area. I have these from Gettysburg, Shiloh, Corinth, Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, Cold Harbor, Manassas, Malvern Hill, New Market, Petersburg, Battle of the Crater, Wilderness, Chickamauga, Atlanta, and Vicksburg. I have a few miscellaneous items from other areas that I could create a display using. Let me know which battle area you are interested in. $35.00

$6.00

CW008 - 7-Bullet Display - This beautiful display of contains 7 different bullets excavated in the Northern Virginia area. $35.00

$6.00

CW009 - 6-Item Display - This display contains 4 bullets, one cartridge, and one other item - all excavated in the Northern Virginia area. $35.00

CW009 - 6-Item Display - This is another example of the CW009 display above except rather than a cartridge and another item, it includes a canteen spout and canteen stopper. $35.00
CW010 - 7-Item Attributed Display - This display is similar to CW0007 above. $35.00

CW010 - 7-Item Attributed Display - Same as CW010 except it has a different grouping of items. $35.00

$6.00

CW011 - Pulled Bullet & Worm Display - This display contains a misfired and pulled bullet and either an excavated or a found bullet worm. The found worms I have were found in the ruins of a CW arsenal and show no rust. $25.00

$6.00

CW012 - Unusual Civil War Bullets - This display contains 4 unusual Civil War bullets. Included is a CSA Buck and Ball, a Chewed or Pain bullet, a Pulled bullet and a Carved bullet. $39.00

$6.00

CW013 - Lock of hair from a killed Confederate soldier - This unique item is from one of my ancestors. Harrison Cockrell was killed at Manasses in 1861. He was surrounded by relatives who had enlisted with him when he was killed and those relatives sent a small box of his hair to his mother in Macon, Mississippi. I created similar displays for family members and had two left over. The display contains a lock of hair, a copy of the obitiary, the text of the obit, and a little info about him. Only two are available. $39.00
