Navajo Code Talkers

When the Navajo Indians entered the Marines in WWII, they were armed with a secret weapon: the Navajo language. The original 29 code talkers grew to a total of 420 - all serving in the Pacific. The Japanese never broke their code. Thirteen of the code talkers were killed in action and many more were wounded. They worked in teams of four. Two would go ashore with the Marines on the first wave and two would remain on the ship to receive the messages and pass them on to the "big brass," keeping them informed of the progress of the invasion. Initially the white soldiers did not like the Indians, but it did not take them long to get rid of that prejudice. As soon as they demonstrated they could send and decode a lengthy message in less than two minutes as opposed to the cryptologist's two hours to do the same, they were 100% accepted. Also, they were far more accurate than the cryptologists - never making a mistake in the coding or decoding of a message. When the American flag was finally raised on Mt. Suribachi, it was the Code Talkers who relayed the news in Navajo: "Sheep-Uncle-Ram-Ice-Bear-Ant-Cat-Horse-Itch." There were harrowing moments. On more than one occasion the Navaho were mistaken by Marines and held captive for hours before it got straightened out.

Any autographs of the original 29 are very scarce.

Below is a list of all of the Navajo Code Talkers who served in WWII. As of summer 2009, only four of the original 29 are still living.

The original first 29 will have a "1" before their name. Those killed in action will have "KIA ????" where the "????" is the action where they paid the ultimate price. The one exception is Howard Tsosie. I believe he was killed at Bougainville, but have not been able to confirm that.
