Stuka Pilot - This is the outstanding biography of Germany’s most
decorated soldier - Hans Ulrich Rudel - the only recipient of the Knights
Cross with Gold Oakleaves, Swords and Diamonds. This book was presented to
Walter Cronkite by a friend, who wrote a long note on the inside cover.
Cronkite later presented the to Colin Heaton, who at the time was working on
his Masters Degree. Heaton then took the book to the Fleigertreffen Reunion
in Germany in 1998 and got 22 Axis and Allied aces to sign the book. Among
those signing it were Gerhard Schoepfel, Wolfgang Falk, Hans Jabs, Walter
Schuck, Heinz Lange, Gunther Rall, Hajo Hermann, Walter Krupinski, Adolf
Borchers, Adolf Galland, Erich Hartmann, Hanes Trautloft, Johannes
Steinhoff, Herbert Ihlefeld, Erich Rudorffer, Saburo Sakai, Walter Schuck,

The Final Hours - This 176-page book describes Johannes
Steinhoff’s story of some of his experiences. Steinhoff, who rose to become
chief of staff of the post-war German air force and chairman of NATO’s
military committee, along with Adolf Galland and a handful of senior air
officers, devised a plot to depose Goering from his command of the
Luftwaffe. The war ended for Steinhoff when his ME262 jet crashed and burned
on takeoff. His memories are vivid, painful, and gripping. This book is
signed by Steinhoff and 11 others - including President Ronald Reagan.
Others signing the book are Adolf Galland, Erich Hartmann, Jimmy Doolittle,
Robert Stanford Tuck, John Cunningham, Dennis David, Johnnie Johnson, Brian
Kingcome, and Wolfgang Falk. NOTE: The Reagan signature
must have been a joke on someone's part because all of these signatures were
obtained at the same reunion in the 1980's and Reagan never attended any of
these reunions. It sounds like something Hrabak would have done but since
Hrabak did not sign this book, he probably was not at that reunion. |
