Pre-WWII Medal of
Honor Hand-Signed Autographs
With Framable Album
Pages
Click here to go to the 1940 to date MOH
recipient page
This page includes pre World War II
documents and autographs - most from the Civil War period. These are all
one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. Signatures of U.S. Civil War
Medal of Honor recipients are very difficult to find and when you do find
one the seller more often than not is only offering one. Here you will
find scores and all are economically priced.
The list below is pretty much complete,
missing only a few items that have been miss-filed and the many I have
near duplicates of. As I find the missing ones I will add them. When an
item sells, I will replace it with a similar one if I have it. Otherwise I
will delete the sold items.
If
you are interested in an item and it does not yet have a price or
description, please contact me and I will eMail you the details.
Most come with a descriptive album page
that is in a heavy poly holder punched with three holes to fit a standard
8.5" x 11" ring binder. The album page will have appropriate pictures, the
subject's citation, and, where possible, other details about him. All
items that are mounted on the album pages are done so that the autograph
or signed item can be easily removed with no damage.
In addition to the Medal of Honor
items, there are a few other Civil War documents, letters, etc.
Click on the picture for a larger view.

Facsimiles/Reproductions
With two exceptions, everything on this
site is authentic. The two exceptions are the reproductions of Medals and
Decorations and the reproductions of very rare, expensive, and difficult to find
autographs. To go to the page that features the reproductions of Medals and
Decorations, click here.
To go to the page that features album pages with reproductions of rare
autographs, click here.
To Order
Shipping and
Insurance on any of these items is $6.00 per order domestic and $12.50 per order
foreign unless otherwise noted..

Many of my Civil War
autographs came from a rare autograph book that was sold at
the Army Relief Bazaar at Albany, New York, Feb. 22nd 1864. The cover
of that autograph book is pictured on the left. The proceeds from this
bazaar were applied to the relief of the sick and wounded of the Army
and Navy through the U.S. Sanitary Commission. Generals of the Army
and Navy were asked to contribute their autographs, which were then
mounted in the book. All of these autographs were collected between
Dec. 15, 1863 and Feb. 22, 1864. |

Julie Opie Hopkins - Julie Hopkins had something in common with Dr.
Mary Walker - Julie was the only Confederate female to be awarded the
Confederate Medal of Honor. This display contains a very rare Hopkins
signature. and also a note that has per picture on it. In addition to being a nurse, she spent an estimated $500,000
of her own money for supplies, to assist widows, etc. This check is for
one of those payments. The Alabama 25c note is an authentic 1863 note that
carries Hopkins' picture in the lower right. The autograph is mounted on a
descriptive album page. Rare. |
 |

Bennett Young - Lt. Young was a
Lieutenant and a Kentucky cavalry officer. On October 19, 1864 he and about
two dozen Confederate raiders descended on St. Albans, Canada and robbed
three banks of about $200,000 of funds much needed by the Confederacy,
killing one man and wounding three others. He was one of only a few
Confederate soldiers awarded the Confederate Medal of Honor. This is a very
nice handwritten bank document written and signed by Young. The autograph
comes with a descriptive album page. Rare. |

RARE Orders for the 1917 Medal of Honor Purge - This is the famous
Bulletin #15 dated March 24, 1917 that announces the famous Purge of 1917
where 911 recipients were stripped of their decoration - Including the only
female recipient, Dr. Mary Walker, and the scout, Buffalo Bill. Over 60
years later President Jimmy Carter reinstated Mary Walker's MOH and a
thirteen years later President George Bush reinstated Buffalo Bill's
along with five other scouts. This would be a superb addition to any Medal
of Honor collection.Bulletin #15 is the digest
of opinions of the Judge Advate General of the Army for the month of
February, 1917. It is a 16-page document and the Medal of Honor order
comprises about 2/3 of page #6. |

Nelson A. Miles was a
Colonel in the 61st New York Infantry who was decorated with the Medal of
Honor for heroism at Chancellorsville. This is a rare, wartime fully
handwritten and signed note where Miles is recommending Colonel Robert
Nugent as Assistant Provost Marshall. Nugent
was wounded, shot in the stomach, at the
Battle of Fredericksburg and was eventually forced to resign his
command. He was appointed acting assistant
provost marshal for the southern district of New York, which included
New York City and Long Island, by the
US War Department. Paper was scarce at that time and
Miles' note is written on the back of another handwritten document, written
in someone else's hand, containing a list of promotions. |

came from the fund raising book described at the top of this page. The

William Wherry served with the 3rd
U.S. Reserve Missouri Infantry and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his
heroism at Wilson's Creek, Missouri. He continued to serve in the military
until his retirement in1899. In the 1870's he served as Assistant Adjutant
General under General John Schofield at West Point. Schofield, by the way,
was also a Medal of Honor recipient. This great signature was clipped from a
document and signed in Wherry's hand, "By command of Major General
Schofield, Wm M.Wherry, Asst. Adjt. General." The autograph is mounted on a
descriptive album page. |

on a descriptive album page that includes his photo, his gravestone, and the
Matthew Brady portrait of Willcox and his staff. He died May 10, 1907. This
wartime signed signature came from the fund raising book described at the
top of this page. |

of Honor for his heroism at Four Oaks, Virginia. He graduated fourth in his

He was decorated with the Medal of Honor for his heroism at Four Oaks,
Virginia. He graduated fourth in his class at West Point. After the war he
founded Howard University - the first university for Blacks. Howard died
October 26, 1909. This handwritten note is written on War Department
stationery. It also comes with a very nice, vintage steel engraving of
Howard, pictured at the left. The steel engraving measures approximately 8"
x 10" Note there is some bleeding of the ink on the hand written note and
there is a small tear at the top right of the steel engraving. |

Order relates to Ft. Apache. I found it interesting that West Point graduate
Capt. William D. Fuller was arrested and this Special Order mentions that.
Fuller was arrested for reasons not mentioned while serving in Indian
territory. He is mentioned several times in Cozzen's book, "The Army and the
Indians." The order also orders that Pvt. Martin Nelson, stationed at Ft.
Apache, is transferred from Company M to Company I of the 23rd Infantry. |

Horatio C. King was a Major
in the Quartermaster, U.S. Volunteers. He received his Medal of Honor for
heroism near Dinwiddie Courthouse, Virginia, March 31, 1865. This is a very
nice handwritten note on King's personal note card. It is dated Octobger 29,
1877. At that time he was the Publisher of The Christian Union.
Interestingly, Henry Ward Beecher was the Editor of the publication at that
time. |
